Reading is one of the most important skills in life and we all use it every day!
At Gomersal Primary School, we want children not only to read for functionality but also to develop a love of reading.
We have developed opportunities throughout school to create an environment rich in reading and we also provide children with reading opportunities throughout the curriculum.
Children in EYFS are read with on a 1:1 or small group basis in school. They will bring home a colour banded book and are encouraged to read regularly at home.
Every KS1 child participates in guided reading on a weekly basis and we follow the Rigby Star guided reading scheme. In addition to guided reading, children take home a colour banded book which they are encouraged to read regularly at home with an adult. This will continue through KS2 until your child's teacher feels they have reached the expected standard. In Years 4, 5 and 6, some of the guided reading is done using a whole class novel.
Here are some of the reading intervention programmes that run in school.
Toe by Toe - a small red book designed for anyone who finds reading difficult. This includes weak readers who struggle to decode or those with dyslexic difficulties.
Rapid Reading – Rapid Reading books from Pearson are designed for one-to-one reading sessions with struggling learners in Key Stage 2. Great care has been taken to combine age-appropriate content that is engaging for 6 to 10 year olds with levelled texts pitched at a lower reading ability.
